Day One: Arrive in Shanghai 在上海开车
Depending on your flight, you will arrive either at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) or Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). Travel to your accommodation by calling a taxi or taking the subway. If you arrive at PVG, you can kickstart your holiday by speeding into town on the Shanghai Maglev 上海磁浮示范运营线. This unique journey operates up to 300km/h and takes only 7 minutes and 20 seconds. Upon arrival, this day should be saved for potentially adjusting to the time difference and resting up. Depending on your location, head out to find some local Shanghainese food such as simple Shanghai fried noodles 上海炒面, soup dumplings 小笼包 or noodle soup 汤面. You can enjoy a short walk around your hotel or hostel to become familiar with the area and see what hidden gems you may find. Stop in some local boutiques or try street snacks while simply taking in these new surroundings.

Day Two: Downtown Shanghai 上海市中心城区
You wake up early, refreshed and ready for the day ahead. Where else to begin than downtown Shanghai 上海? Comprising Jing’an 静安, Xuhui 徐汇 and Huangpu 黄埔 districts, this day will be all about exploring the modern and busy Shanghai 上海 portrayed on television. In downtown Shanghai 上海, expect an interesting contrast between the old and new city and observe how the two distinct worlds merge together. The area is bordered by both the Suzhou and Huangpu Rivers and is known for being densely populated. You’ll feel busy but excited by the fast-paced nature of Shanghai 上海. So, where are the must-see places?
Some unmissable sights to visit are Jing’an Temple 静安寺, The Bund 外滩, Yuyuan Garden 豫园 and People’s Square 人民广场. Whilst Xuhui 徐汇 can also be classified as downtown Shanghai 上海, this deserves its own dedicated day. All of these districts comprise traditional architecture with a modern spin and offer incredible photo opportunities. For artists and gallery lovers, visit Shanghai Museum 上海博物馆 or the Shanghai Natural History Museum 上海自然博物馆. If you are a shopper, West Nanjing Road 南京西路 and East Nanjing Road 南京东路 are perfect locations. The areas around here offer stunning backstreets and picturesque glimpses of the remaining traditional Shanghai 上海. Try delicious Shanghainese snacks along your way and see what other parts of the culture draw you in. Visit People’s Park 人民公园 and you may even spot the infamous Shanghai marriage market 人民公园相亲角, renowned for being where parents seek suitable partners for their children. The area is renowned for beautiful, spacious parks Travel between these locations by hailing a Shanghai taxi or walking. If you have access to an Alipay 支付宝 or Meituan 美团网 app, you can rent city bicycles. Cycling around Shanghai 上海 is one of the best ways to see the city.
Top tips: Purchase a day pass for the Shanghai metro. Admire the architecture. Try local snacks. Walk wherever possible. Communicate with the locals. Let your day flow without a strict structure.
Day Three: Pudong 浦东
As the biggest district in Shanghai, Pudong 浦东 has a lot to offer. Not only does it boast open spaces, rural areas and the infamous Lujiazui 陆家嘴, but Pudong 浦东 is also home to other hidden gems. With stunning parks and endless cycling trails, this district is the perfect place to spend a sunny day. Begin with fun experiences such as visiting the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium 上海海洋水族馆, the Oriental Pearl Tower 东方明珠塔 or the Shanghai Tower 上海大厦. These iconic locations poignantly depict modern Shanghai 上海. Here, you can admire the sheer size of Shanghai 上海 and overlook the never-ending city. Nearby, Century Park 世纪公园 offers beautiful green spaces to enjoy the sun. If you enjoy interesting architecture, China Art Museum 中国艺术博物馆 is a must-see and a perfect location for photography. Whilst travelling in between locations, you can cycle or walk down the Huangpu Riverside 黄浦江畔 and visit the East Bund 东外滩. If you enjoy full-day experiences, don’t miss the Shanghai Wild Animal Park 上海野生动物园 or the Shanghai Astronomy Museum 上海天文博物馆. With a more family-oriented feel, Pudong 浦东 may be an option for those seeking a relaxing week in Shanghai. With less nightlife and more families, it should be considered for those with young children.
Overall, Pudong has something for everyone and you are never short of options on this side of the Huangpu River 黄浦江. The contrast between modern Lujiazui 陆家嘴 and rural outer Pudong 上海 is not to be missed by any traveller to Shanghai 上海.

Day Four: Xuhui 徐汇 and The French Concession 上海法租界
Renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture and a European feel, Xuhui 徐汇 and the Shanghai Former French Concession 上海法租界 are two of the most beautiful and unique parts of Shanghai 上海. Boasting charming homes and endless greenery, you will be surprised that these are the true city streets. Prepare for a day of walking and photography as you explore the history, charisma and beauty of the Shanghai Former French Concession 上海法租界.
Think of this as a more relaxing day. This district is expansive but the best way to explore is by foot. Considering the simple charm of the tree-lined streets and architecture, walking is the greatest way to ensure you take in every detail. Along your way, explore local bars, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. You cannot miss the historic Wukang Mansion 武康大厦, Julu Road 巨鹿路 and Hengshan Road 衡山路. As a stark contrast to the modern skyline of Lujiazui, Xuhui 徐汇 offers a more quaint and calm vibe. The atmosphere is cool and aesthetically pleasing and perfectly matches the accompanying lane houses. Walk the back alleyways of Tianzifang 田子坊 or relax in Fuxing Park 复兴公园 before ending your day in one of many local restaurants. Interestingly, many historic sites are located in this area and you can see the incredible former residences of famous figures. For delicious eats, this area is renowned for delicious French and Italian bistros which seamlessly fit the subtle European feel.

Day Five: Songjiang 松江 and Qingpu 青浦
Ever wondered what lies outside the bustling city centre of Shanghai 上海? If you are searching for a rural, quaint experience without travelling too far, Songjiang 松江 and Qingpu 青浦 districts are perfect for you. Located close to the western border of Zhejiang 浙江 and Jiangsu 江苏 provinces, these districts offer incredible nature and rich culture within the greater Shanghai 上海 area. Due to being within close proximity to one another, both can be easily explored on the same day. So, what is hiding on the outskirts of Shanghai 上海?
Expect ancient towns, water forests, rural villages and calm lakes. Qingpu 青浦 is home to the stunning ancient water town named Zhujiajiao 朱家角. With Venice-like canals and ancient boats, you can take a trip down the green streams whilst watching local shopkeepers run their businesses. Visit local temples and try street snacks in this relaxing getaway from the bustling nature of downtown Shanghai 上海. Once you have finished, take a short trip to the neighbouring Songjiang 松江 district. Here, you can choose between water parks or theme parks. The district is renowned for Shanghai Film Park 上海电影园, British-style Thames Town 泰晤士小镇 and Sheshan 佘山.
Day Six: Shanghai Disneyland 上海迪斯尼乐园
For both lovers and non-lovers of Disney, the magical Shanghai Disneyland 上海迪斯尼乐园 is a must-see location. Boasting incredible charm and an all-around day of fun, this place is not only for young children and families. For a day of theme-park enjoyment, come and explore the different theme lands and ride some rollercoasters. Located in Pudong district 浦东区, this resort is well worth the journey. When entering the Chinese market, the Disney company sought a unique mix between the beloved Disney history and traditional parts of Chinese culture. With meticulous planning and attention to detail, the iconic resort opened to the public in 2016. Now, it is a huge tourist attraction and one which draws millions of fans every year. Featuring the world's largest Disney castle, seven themed lands and shows performed in Mandarin, this is an experience you do not want to miss. The infamous, high-speed Tron rollercoaster is located here and you can even meet Mickey Mouse. Day Seven: Departure 启程

You have walked the quaint, sycamore-lined streets of Shanghai 上海 and been caught in a rush hour of 26 million people. You have felt lost in the mazes of endless alleyways and admired the charm of Shanghai’s 上海 nightlife. Without question, China’s biggest and most populous city has exceeded all expectations.
